While I agree that it would be nice to have a relicensed version of the macro, I doubt whether or not this is really a critical issue. Our motive for including the macro is so that you can install pkgconf instead of pkg-config and have the pkg.m4 available for autoconf use (which is GPL anyway).

This seems more symbolic than practical and therefore is a waste of time. That said, if someone were to write a replacement which is non-GPL and agreed to maintain compatibility with the original pkg.m4, I would be willing to consider merging it.
