Policy

Our standard policy for Treehouse is to deny accounts to for-profit commercial interests such as corporations.

This small business account exemption is intended to allow active members of our community to represent their small business activities, not to provide a space for brands, which we believe is in line with the spirit of our policies.

Think Etsy shops and consultancies when considering whether a business account meets the requirements of this exemption.

Small business accounts like all other organizational accounts are by invitation only. The guidelines are:

  • Less than 20 employees.

  • No venture capitalization, e.g. Series A, etc.

  • The small business must be directed by users who are already members of our community.

  • Activities of the small business must be aligned with our intersectional community values, including but not limited to:

    • Enabling upward mobility for marginalized people
    • Pursuit of social equity
    • Advancement of software freedom

In the event that a small business outgrows the guidelines for the small business account exemption, they will be expected to migrate from the instance. We will work with the small business to facilitate a smooth migration onto another instance that is better suited for their needs.

It should also be noted that our moderators are not here to protect a small business from criticism for its actions. Asking for this sort of support will likely result in us showing your small business the door.
